Sweet Crude (Seattle Filmmaker Sandy Cioffi)

Sweet Crude is the story of Nigeria’s Niger Delta – the human and environmental consequences of 50 years of oil extraction and the members of a new insurgency who, in the three years after the filmmakers met them as college students, became the young men of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). Set against a stunning backdrop of Niger Delta footage, the film shows the humanity behind the statistics and sensationalized media portrayal of the region, gives voice to a complex mix of stakeholders and invites the audience to learn the deeper story. ...

Gentrification in Seattle

Over the past 10 years, development and increased population in Seattle has been sparked by a huge influx of high-paid, mostly white, mostly tech-sector employees into the city. Amazon.com is a large driver of this change. Because of this influx (about 14,000 new residents per year), rent has skyrocketed, house availability has declined greatly, and rising property taxes and prices are driving out the poor — and especially people of color — to the outskirts and to other cities. This is having a huge impact on communities like the CD (or Central District). This video explains some of the impact in the CD in the words of local residents: [vimeo 122209635 w=500 h=281] ...

Report-Back from #ShellNO Protest

Canoes, kayaks, and other vessels approach the rig. As many of you no doubt know, the Port of Seattle is currently hosting Shell Oil Company’s enormous arctic drilling rig. In several weeks, the rig will leave Elliot Bay and be towed to the Arctic Ocean, where Shell plans to begin oil drilling operations. The chances of an oil spill occurring due to rough weather conditions has been estimated at 75%. And, of course, even oil drilling without spills is ecocide (as this biting satire points out). ...

Anne Braden: Southern Patriot (Anti-Racist Film Screening)

Check out this event from European Dissent Seattle: Click the image for a larger version of the poster. Film screening and discussion as part of our work to build a base of anti-racist white organizers!Saturday, December 13th3:30 - 6:00pmYWCA, 2820 E Cherry, Seattle WA 98122 ALL ARE WELCOME! European Dissent Seattle presents a screening and discussion about this documentary on pioneering white anti-racist organizer Anne Braden. The documentary explores the life and legacy of this American civil rights leader. After she was charged with sedition for attempting to desegregate a Louisville, Kentucky neighborhood in 1954, Braden used the attack to turn herself “inside out” and embarked upon a lifetime of racial justice organizing matched by few whites in American history. Braden was hailed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as a white southerner whose rejection of her segregationist upbringing was “eloquent and prophetic,” and named as one of only five white southerners he could count as allies. Labeled a “traitor to her race” and ostracized as a “red” by segregationists and even many in the civil rights movement, she fought for an inclusive movement community and demonstrated that protecting civil liberties was essential to gaining civil rights. After decades of being shunned by even the most progressive organizations, in 1989 Anne Braden was awarded the first Roger Baldwin Medal of Liberty from the American Civil Liberties Union as a “lifelong leader of the movements for racial justice, labor rights, and peace in the South.” Read more: http://annebradenfilm.org/about/ ...

The End of Gender: Revolution, Not Reform

Excerpt From DGR Frequently Asked Questions “Deep Green Resistance has been accused of transphobia because we have a difference of opinion about the definition of gender. DGR does not condone dehumanization or violence against anyone, including people who describe themselves as trans. Universal human rights are universal. DGR has a strong code of conduct against violence and abuse. Anyone who violates that code is no longer a member of DGR. ...

Sex Trafficking and Prostitution - Deep Green Resistance Seattle

Seattle is a hub of the sex trade. Authorities estimate 300 to 500 people are victims of human trafficking in the Northwest every year – mostly women forced to work as prostitutes. This video shows some progressive efforts being taken to criminalize the buying of sex (which we believe is economically-coercive rape). Deep Green Resistance stands for abolishing the sex trade and decriminalizing women who have been forced – by people or by circumstance – to take part in it. As such we advocate for the Nordic Model - an approach that makes sense and has hard data backing up it’s effectiveness. ...

False Solutions: "Green Energy"

Two passionate environmentalists discuss the merits and issues of “Alternative Energy” technologies. They argue that it is not the path to a secure and sustainable future, that it threatens human rights, and that it is the wrong path for morally-conscious environmentalists. Topics discussed include the alternative energy industry, community-scale implementation, environmental complications of alternative technologies, and more. This talk was given at PIELC (Public Interest Environmental Law Conference) in 2014 in Eugene, OR. ...
